The need for such a facility was recognized by a group of local professionals who dedicated not only their talents and resources, but also their continuous energies to make Canyon Lakes Residential Treatment Center a reality in October 1987. These dedicated individuals today comprise the Board of Directors for Canyon Lakes.Prior to the opening of the Canyon Lakes facility, no treatment center of its kind was available within 100 miles of the Lubbock area. Therefore, it was necessary to refer children to facilities across the state. This long distance factor presented a conflict to an important component of the desired and effective treatment that is family involvement.
